Cairo Day Tour: Islamic Cairo Full Day Tour - Citadel, Al Azhar Mosque, Sultan Hassan Mosque and Khan El Khalili Bazaar

 Islamic Cairo Full Day Tour

Egypt possesses a magnificent art and architectural heritage that has lasted more than thirteen hundred years, beginning with the building of the Mosque of Amr in the seventh century. Cairo is full of medieval masterpieces that reflect the status of Egypt as the center of several significant Islamic empires

Islamic Cairo is not more or less Islamic than the rest of the city, but it’s the area of the city which holds the most, the greatest and the most famous Islamic monuments. Many of these raised by the Fatimid caliphs who founded the city Cairo (preceded by Fustat or Old Cairo). Unlike Islamic quarters in other cities, people, often quite poor, continue to live by historic monuments and mosques. A huge, bustling center of worship, trade, shopping and commuting – it’s a must-see for any visitors and deserves at least a couple of days to explore.

  • Cairo Citadel
  • Khan el‑Khalili: major souk in Islamic Cairo.
  • Mosque‑Madrassa of Sultan Hassan
  • Muizz Street: goes through Islamic Cairo has great concentration of bazaars and Islamic architectures.
  • Mosque of Muhammad AliFustat
  • Gates of Cairo

The Garbage People, comprising mostly Coptic Christians, first immigrated to Cairo in the 1930s in search of big city dreams and land under their feet. Being very poor, and without a solid 401k plan, they got by whatever way they could: living in makeshift housing and recycling the city’s compostable waste products by feeding it to their pigs.

The Temples of Abu Simbel with their unique style are amongst the most interesting Pharaonic Temples, They reflect the glory and grandeur of the new Kingdom. The temples date back to the reign of King Ramses II (1290-1223 BC). The first Temple was built by King Ramses II and is dedicated to the God Re-Hor-Akhty, Amon, Ptah, and King Ramses II as a deified King. The Temple of Queen Nefertari is located 120m from the Temple of Ramses II and was also built by Ramses II, dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and to his wife Queen Nefertari. Hundreds of Camels are sold here everyday. But this is definitely not a market for the Animal lover. The animals aren’t in pitiable condition, but they could be treated much, much better than they currently are.

In the afternoon, proceed to Old Cairo and see the main sights, such as the Roman Fortress of Babylon and the Hanging Church, the Church of Abu Serga, and the Jewish Synagogue of Ben Ezra. Explore the Citadel of Saladin and take some pictures of the panorama of the citadel, before exploring the mosque of Mohammed Ali Pasha inside the citadel.

Take a stroll over Cairo’s biggest market, Khan El Khalili Bazaar, before proceeding to the port to board your dinner cruise ship. Enjoy a buffet dinner and be mesmerized by the oriental show. You will be driven back to your accommodation both days after the tour is finished.

On this tour you will also have the chance to try authentic Egyptian food, such as ‘koshary’ (a mixture of lentils, rice and macaroni with a topping of tomato-vinegar sauce. There is a variation of spaghetti garnished with chickpeas and crispy fried onion. Garlic juice and hot sauce are optional additions), ‘foul’ (or ‘ful medames’, cooked fava beans served with oil, cumin and optional additions of parsley, garlic, onion, lemon juice and chili pepper) or ‘falafel’ (deep-fried patty made from ground fava beans served in a pita).
